I’ve been asking on Twitter about what kinds of webcomics perhaps get misappropriated, or has a lot of prejudice against, either because of some comics making a bad name for everyone, or just basic idiotic societal stigma. Here I look at several suggestions. The point is to try and look at some show topics. While not all may actually find the original premise of my initial question, I feel I should share some incite on potential show topics for future episodes (if we make it that far).
We are already booked for a couple months, and there are A LOT of ideas. I can’t say when we’ll be getting to any of them in particular, but I’m trying my best to plan ahead as much as I can.
(1a) Video Game comics are hard to pin down on who we’d want to have on… as there honestly aren’t that many GOOD ones that I know about. Two people I WANTED to get to come on (particularly for parody comics of VG characters/worlds), but they couldn’t come on for assorted reasons.
(1b) GAMER comics are even harder to pin down because you have the Penny Arcade clones, and again some are just not that great anyway…. So as far as finding a guest for this topic, it’s kinda hard, though I would love to go into this topic.
(2) MANGA-like comics are another topic we’ve not really gone into. I would love to get some people in on this show, though I’d want to find great and original content. Not merely parodies or similarities to established, commercial series. Part of me looking for people for such a show is to find those that are really breaking the stereotype of their art style.
(3) Cyberpunk, Steampunk, or whatever, those are some good ideas to look into. I kinda have someone I’m already talking to about such a show… I don’t think they are necessarily a “big” comic, but they’ve shown an initiative in the subject in pointing out comics other than their own. There is another person I’d like to get on the show for something like this, but it be a feature (if I can get them) of them, and not so much a genre show.
(4) Sprite and/or Pixel comics.… (A) Find me some critically good ones that don’t use copyrighted, commercial characters from video games. or (B) Point me to the most popular of the ones of the copyrighted, commercial characters from video games, for a different show topic.
(5) “Fantasy” comics has been mentioned, but that is incredibly vague… especially when people usually mean “Medieval” or “D&D-esque” or “Tolken-esque”. So I’d be lookjing at SPECIFIC types of fantasy as show topics. Easier to discuss.
(6) Superheroes - Again, another WIDE subject. I do have plans to break down TYPES of superheroes for shows. Like Magic/Supernatural, Science/Science Fiction, Radiation, Mutation… makes it easier to talk about.
(7) “G-Rated” comics we’ve already discussed on one show. Might look into that subject again though.
(8) LEGO comics are something we’ll get into in the summer I hope. DONE!
(9) CGI comics are something I’ve been trying to do, but I can’t seem to get the person I want on. Oh well, I’ll be looking at a couple others next…. summer maybe.
(10) “Non-Norm” Romance or GLBT Comics is something that we may get into. Might be touching on that a bit in a couple coming episodes, but probably not as a focus. For many “non-maintream” (so-to-speak) comics, I try not to isolate them or present them differently than “mainstream” styled comics. I would like to present them just like any other comic… but that’s hard to do.
(11) Adult/Porn comics… again, this may come back as a show topic. Though we’ll likely look in different places, to not overlap what we’ve already covered.
(12) Blaxploitation comics were mentioned, but I’m not even sure that’s a big genre.. as I only know of one comic…. may need to be tied into another inclusive topic if we cover it.
(13) Photocomics. Yes, I want to have another Photocomic episode. I’m pretty sure I know who I want to get.
(14) Transgender Comics… Like #10, but this is already in the works for a revisit… but moreso as a kick-off to a look into “Misappropriated Genres”.
(15) Furry comics. We already had a GREAT episode on furries, but I don’t think we went into the comics as much. Though I think most of us know the kinds of layers of furry comics we could get into. This show would be a look into the non-sexual ones… those would be saved for a more appropriately themed episode, if we do it.
Any other feedback on these ideas (or others) would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I’d be very interested to hear what you and everyone else on the show has to say about transgendered themes in comics.
There are very few comics that take the various aspects of transgenderism seriously, and mostly play it for ill-informed laughs rather than the often debilitating condition it actually is.
In this regard, it may be worth contacting Erin Lindsey of ‘Venus Envy’, Jen Dolari of ‘Closetspace’ and Chris Hazelton of ‘Misfile’ (who may also be someone to contact regarding manga comics).

I think it would be very helpful to focus on non-sexual furry comics for one show, as you suggest. Many artists (myself included) despair more and more about the misconception that if you draw a furry comic, it’s obviously about sex.
Sadly, yiff is a self-fulfilling prophecy – as more young artists turn to the internet to find something like their own art, they find yiff, and think this is the norm – and so that is what they create, and increase the chances of the next budding comic artist finding nothing but yiff.
I refuse to even consider anything overtly sexual in my comic, as I take a hard-line stand to counter the public misconception that furry art is about nothing but sex and weirdos. Personally, I hate yiff, and I refuse outright to become that cliche.
Anthropomorphic comics are uniquely lucky in that they have the capacity to offer social commentary without the risk of offence or being hamstrung by politically-correct hangups – but sadly, there’s very few out there that take up this challenge (I don’t, because I don’t feel I have the skill at such commentary). So instead we get mostly yiff and nonsense, with a few good things hidden away in the mess.
It would be nice to have a show that tries to dig out some of these “diamonds in the rough”, comics and works that you believe help to break these common misconceptions of anthropomorphic comics.
For every 500 pointless, vacuuous furry comics that are just about titllation and sex, there is a MAUS.

At DogSounds. We have Furry Comics episode already, but we didn’t really focus on too many. The next chance I get to do a Furry show again, the plan was to *not* look at Yiff comics.
I’ve had a couple in mind, but this show may not happen for a while yet.

I’m a passerby, so I’m not completely sure if you’ve ever done any of these on your show, but if you really want suggestions, well…
1a) If you mean webcomics focused on one specific game series, you’ll find it’s a veritable ocean out there. Mario, Megaman, Sonic the Hedgehog, Halo, Touhou, it’s been done to death and back. Maybe try Dave Anez, the guy who made Bob and George. Or maybe Brian Clevinger, the guy who does 8-bit Theater.
1b) If you mean general gaming jokes, harder to find anything noteworthy. Brawl in the Family is a nice candidate. F@nb0y$ might work too.
3) Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg Kingdom, maybe Narbonic or Skin Horse.
4) Kid Radd. No question. Long dead, but one of a kind.
6) Lightbringer. The guy who scripts it is Linkara, so you could ask him stuff about comics in general.
7) Little Dee.
10) Girly, although that’s kind of cheating.
11) Unless you want to do something like interview the entire staff of Slipshine for their works outside of Slipshine, do not go anywhere near the terrifying world of pornographic webcomics. It’s left me mental scars I’ll never be rid of.
13) DM of the Rings, Darths and Droids, Alien Loves Predator.
14) Most transgender comics are far too bubbly or far too angst-ridden to have a serious discussion about gender dysphoria.
15) Dan and Mabs Furry Adventures, Digger, Freefall, Ozy and Millie.
Well, if you want any other suggestions, see if you can interview Ian Jones-Quartey. He used to do a webcomic called RPG World, which was a pretty funny JRPG Parody. Now he’s an animation’s director who worked on stuff like Venture Bros episodes, so you could ask him how it was like working there.

How about having a topic on the readers, with non-webcartoonist readers as guests? Michael Kinyon (who’s goal was to follow as many creators as possible on Twitter) and Gary Tyrell (the primary contributor to the webcomics blog Fleen) come to mind.
It could be a good look at the flip side, since most of us here can only see webcomics from a creator’s point of view…
